A popular trend is emerging in garden design: the use of river rocks. In the past river rocks were used for their functionality in areas where water drainage was a concern. Today river rocks are commonly used to increase the appeal of a garden and often reflect that of a Japanese Garden.
A Japanese Garden combines lush plant material, rocks and statuary and is balanced and harmonious. A garden that contains only plant material may appear flat and one dimensional. Incorporating river rocks into a garden adds another dimension and creates a story or theme; commanding the attention of passersby.
Incorporating river rocks into a garden design requires a creative eye however, a little research and planning will go a long way. Below are a few suggestions for planning a garden design using river rocks.
Where River Rocks May Be used
- In areas where drainage issues arise.
- To mimic a wet or dry river bed.
- In areas where plants get very little or no sunlight.
- Under large trees where the root system is shallow making it difficult for planting.
- Anywhere in a garden to create a visual interest..
What Kind of Rocks Can be Used
- River rocks are available in many sizes but the assorted 1-3 inch rocks are ideal for small gardens.
- Black river rocks are also available and add a little more drama to a garden however, they may be a little more difficult to find.
How To Install River Rocks
River rocks are easy to install and are available in many garden centers and stone yards. River rocks may be purchased in bags or by the yard. If large quantities are needed purchasing the rocks by the yard is recommended as it is more cost effective. They can also be delivered to the property.
- Dig and level the ground where the rocks will be laid.
- Use landscape fabric to cover the area where the rocks will be placed. Landscape fabric may be purchased at garden centers and hardware stores and is used to prevent most weeds from growing.
- Cover the desired area with the rocks making sure to fill in bare spots with the smaller 1 inch rocks.
- Adding a few boulders within the river rocks adds a little more interest to the space.
- Flagstones may also be used within the river rocks if a walkway is needed.
River rocks add interest and a sense of calm to any garden. They are inexpensive and a great solution for areas in a garden where plants won't thrive. Once installed there is virtually no maintenance required and will be enjoyed for years to come.
